Here snowfall is the biggest enemy for politicians
By: Tupaki Desk | 11 Feb 2022 5:55 PM ISTWhat is the biggest challenge for the politicians fighting elections and campaigning in Uttarakhand? Not rival politicians nor parties. It's the weather. It is snowing so heavily that at least 766 of the 11697 polling centres are covered by snow. With most of these polling booths located at a height of 5000 to 7000 feet, the situation can only worsen.
Officials said that majority of the booths in Chamoli, Nainital and Uttar Kashi are snow-affected. If the same trend continues, there could be very little polling on February 14, when the polling will happen. Meanwhile, 25 senior BJP leaders, including Gujarat MLA Dushyant Patel were trapped between Almora and Jadeshwar Dham in the upper reaches. They were stuck due to the incessant snow. The leaders have released videos claiming that they were safe.
In several places, trekking is the only way to reach the voters. For instance, there are 588 voters in Kakar of Pithoragarh district. For this, the politicians have to trek at least 18 km. Similarly, to reach Dumak, the politicians have to walk at least 20 km. All roads to Monda polling station in Uttar Kashi were damaged in the 2019 floods. The only way to reach the village is by trekking.
For the officials, the ordeal is even more problematic. They have to carry polling material, their personal belongings and walk for days on. For the snow-bound areas, where the polling would be held on Monday, the personnel have to begin trekking from Friday morning itself.
