The Statue of Liberty, a symbol of democracy and freedom was inspired by a face of Arab woman; a recent findings said.It was originally conceived of as being a peasant Muslim woman in traditional Islamic dress.

The statue was designed by French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi. When the Egyptian government sought proposals in 1869 to build a lighthouse for the Suez Canal, Bartholdi designed a statue of a robed Arab woman holding a torch. It was called by him as "Egypt Brings Light to Asia."

The design rejected by Egypt, according to the theory, and used the same robe-clad woman as his model for sculptor Gustave Eiffel's 151-foot statue that has stood in New York Harbor since 1886

Bartholdi's second chance came when French historian Edouard de Laboulaye originated the idea of a monument presented by the French people to the United States representing "Liberty Enlightening the World." In 1870, Bartholdi began designing the statue based on his previous design. It was inaugurated in 1886.
