How Caste Became A Powerful Weapon In MLC Elections?
By: Tupaki Desk | 9 March 2021 4:34 AM GMTIf you thought that caste is a phenomenon prevalent among the less educated and those from the economically weaker background, think again. Caste is one of the most powerful factor in the MLC elections involving highly educated graduate voters. What is surprising is that not just candidates, but even the voters are thinking on caste lines.
Caste has emerged as a very important factor in the Hyderabad-Rangareddy-Mahabubnagar Graduate Constituency MLC elections. The candidates are organizing caste-based meetings, which are attended mostly by young voters. In many cases, the meetings are organized by caste group leaders and associations.
Interestingly, among the major castes that are active are Brahmins, Reddys and Vysyas. However progressive Dr Nageshwar might sound, but the Vysya community to which he belongs is working for him. Organisations like Arya Vysya Officers and Professional Association are spreading the word among the community for Dr Nageshwara Rao. Chinna Reddy, the Congress candidate, too is invoking the caste and will over the support of Reddys.
The most ticklish problem is with the Brahmins. Both BJP's Ramachandra Rao and TRS' Surabhi Vani Devi are from the same community. Both are invoking the community connections. Let's wait and see which of the two Brahmins wins the support of the community.
