How To Fight Pandemic: Change Spelling Of Places
By: Tupaki Desk | 12 Jun 2020 8:00 AM GMTHere's a gem that Tamil Nadu Government has done to divert the attention from the rising cases of pandemic in the state. The state is among the top five states reporting a staggeringly high growth of pandemic cases. It has changed the English spellings of 1018 places on Thursday. No wonder, the Tamils are hotly discussing about these names and have albeit temporarily forgotten the pandemic scare.
According to a GO issued on Friday, Coimbatore will now be spelt as Koyampuththoor. As if this was not enough, Vellore would now be spelt Veeloor. Cities like Madurai and Saidapet will be from now on spelt as Mathurai and Saithaappettai. Shimple D has been replaced by Th. Similarly, Mylapur will now by Mayilaappoor. While change of some names like Tuticorin and Poonamalie is being appreciated, the changes to other names have only helped to complicate the spelling. Popular tourism destination Vedaranyam will now be spelt as Vetharanyam.
The internet, especially the social media has been seeing a lot of memes over the spelling change. Several netizens have advised the government to focus more on controlling Covid rather than burning its midnight oil on changing the spelling.
