Hyderabad wins 2020 edition of Tree City of World among 51 global cities

The Telangana government has started a massive tree-planting program, Haritha Haram back in 2015. CM KCR had proposed the program to promote afforestation to reduce deforestation.
The state government has allocated a budget of Rs 550 crores for the large-scale tree-planting program. According to the information, the tree cover has gone up by 10 percent due to the program.
The tree-planting program has earned a special award for the pearl city Hyderabad. The United Nation's Food and Agriculture Organization and the Arbor Day Foundation have announced Hyderabad as the Tree City of World for the 2020 edition.
Pearl city is the only city from India to find a place in the list of 51 cities that were selected for the award across the globe.
Hyderabad has also created history by joining the list of cities that were selected for the nominations for more than two years. The majority of cities nominated for the cities are from the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and others.
Dan Lambe, the President of the Arbor Day Foundation has showered praises on Hyderabad for winning the award and termed the city as a part of the crucial global network in urban and community forestry.
TRS Working President and IT Minister KTR shared his happiness of Hyderabad winning the 2020 edition of Tree city of the world. He called this an acknowledgment of the government's efforts to improve the green cover.
"Happy to share that Arbor Day Foundation (which works with FAO of UN) has recognised Hyderabad as a Tree city of the world. The only Indian city to be included in this list… This is an acknowledgement of our efforts to improve green cover as part of Haritha Haram programme," KTR tweeted.
