Defeated, But These 3 Ministers Refuse To Resign

The BJP has a strange problem in Madhya Pradesh. The party has won enough seats in the recent bypolls to stabilise the Shivraj Singh Government. But, six of its candidates, including three ministers, have lost. These three ministers are now turning out to be huge embarrassment for the BJP.

All the three ministers are Jyotiraditya Scindia's supporters and have been sworn into the Cabinet after they resigned from their MLA posts as they have won on Congress ticket. They lost the bypolls held recently. Normally, if a minister, who is not a member of any of the houses, can be a minister for a period of six months. Thus they can remain ministers till January 2, 2021. But, since they have lost their elections, there is a persistent demand from the Opposition that they resign their posts on moral grounds.

One minister, Andel Singh Kansana, who lost the election has announced that he would resign his minister's post. But, he has not given any date. The other two ministers – Imarti Devi and Giriraj Dandotia – have refused to resign. They said that they can remain ministers till January 2 regardless of whether they have won or lost and added that they would resign only on January 2. The BJP does not know what to do with them.
