In what it could be a shocker, a Durban court in South Africa sentenced seven years in jail for the great-granddaughter of Mahatma Gandhi, after she was found guilty in a fraud and forgery case.
56-year-old Ashish Lata Ramgobin, who happens to be the great-granddaughter of celebrated personality Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, aka Mahatma Gandhi was found guilty in fraud worth six-million rand and forgery case.
Ramgobin had reportedly defrauded SR Maharaj, a businessman by taking a sum of Rs 6.2 million to clear the import and Customs duties for a non-existent consignment. The businessman reportedly promised to share a portion of profits.
The trial in the case against Ramgobin has been going on for six years. With an intention to convince the investors, she reportedly produced forged invoices and documents.
The Gandhi scion met New Africa Alliance Footwear Distributors director Maharaj back in 2015. As the firm is involved in sales and imports cloths, linen, and footwear, Ramgoblin told him that she had imported three containers that contain linen. She asked to pay the money to clear the duties at the harbour.
