It's a common for practice for all developed nations to have emergency number. The number can be used in emergency situations and avail the services of police, ambulance, or the fire department. But in india we have different numbers to avail emergency services.

Currently different emergency communication and response systems are in place in india - police (100), fire brigade (101), ambulance (102) and Emergency Disaster Management (108).Now Indians too will soon be able to dial a single number.

Like 911 in USA and 999 in Britain india is going to get an emergency number and it would be 112.The Telecom Commission has accepted TRAI's recommendation of making '112' as the official all-in-one emergency number in the country. Once 112 proposal gets final approval from telecoms minister all the existing emergency numbers will be removed.

Current emergency contact numbers like 100 for the police, 101 for the fire department, 102 for ambulance will be continued for a year. The service will be operated by a call centre like facility, which will have representatives speaking in Hindi, English and the local language.
