India Says No To Ukraine's Request To Vote In UN Assembly!
By: Tupaki Desk | 24 Feb 2023 10:09 PM ISTThe whole world went through a tough time for a couple of years due to the deadly outbreak of the novel Coronavirus. As if that was not enough, the European nation Ukraine was forced into a crisis with the superpower nation Russia waging a deadly war. It's been more than one year since the war started.
There is disaster and chaos all over Ukraine. Many structures including big buildings were demolished in the ongoing war. Not just the military bases, civilian areas were also targeted by Russia through missile attacks. Earlier the international media said that Russian forces are after Ukrainian women to sexually harass them.
Ukraine, which is putting up a strong fight against Russian forces, has put up a draft resolution in the UN General Assembly asking the member nations to vote in favour. The resolution says that peace should last in Ukraine as per the principles of the UN Charter.
Yet again India abstained from voting on the resolution. Ukraine requested India to vote, but India maintained its balance nation and did not vote. It is said that the Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, Andrii Borysovych Yermak called National Security Advisor of India Ajit Doval and requested India's help. But that did not happen.
It is known that India and Russia are friendly nations and the friendship traces back a few decades. During the 1971 war, Russia sent its forces to support India and with this, we managed to win the war and thousands of soldiers from the Pakistan side surrendered before India.
With this, India is keeping its distance from voting against Russia at the United Nations General Assembly. When America put up a resolution in the UN against Russia, India kept itself distant from voting. The United States expressed its dissatisfaction with India not voting.
When Ukraine took the resolution to the UN Assembly, India abstained from voting. The Assembly has 193 members. While 141 votes were polled in favor of the resolution, seven votes were polled against the resolution. But 32 nations did not vote for the resolution including India.
