Highest No. Of Internet Shutdowns in India

As many as 97 instances of Internet Shutdown have been recorded between May 2017 and April 2018. In India alone, There were 82 such Internet Shutdowns during that period as per UNESCO.
According to the Clampdowns and Courage-South Asia Press Freedom Report 2017-18, Internet Shutdown was witnessed by people in Pakistan for about 12 times. The count of such instances was limited to just one in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.
Number of Internet shutdowns is being seen as a barometer for freedom of expression and press. India holds the worst record of the Country with Highest Number of Internet Shutdowns. Usually, Internet shutdown is preferred to maintain Law & Order. Close to half of the cases recorded in India are from the Kashmir Valley. More than 10 such instances were witnessed in Rajasthan. The count stood close to 10 in UP, Bihar, Punjab and Haryana.
5 out of 6 Biggest Instances of Internet Shutdown were experienced in India. 45-days in West Bengal's Darjeeling where there is demand for Separate State, 40-days in Bihar's Nawada after communal clashes and 31-days in Jammu and Kashmir.
