Indian Govt Pressurised Twitter: Says EX CEO!
By: Tupaki Desk | 13 Jun 2023 5:27 PM ISTIt is an open secret that social media played a massive role in Bharatiya Janata Party's win in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls. Before the elections, ads on the party's slogan of "Achhe din aane waale hain" were circulated and they caught the mood of the voters. It is no wonder that the ruling party has one of the strongest social media wings. Opposition parties also target the party with WhatsApp University taunts.
Nine years into power, the BJP is facing allegations that it is controlling social media for political gains. Earlier a few international media outlets alleged that Facebook did not remove the hate speeches fearing what the BJP would do. Previous Facebook India's policy head Ankhi Das faced severe allegations in this regard and resigned from her post.
Now another controversy hit the Modi Govt as the previous Chief Executive Officer Jack Patrick Dorsey made sensational allegations. In an interview, Dorsey alleged that Twitter faced some issues and warnings by the Indian government and the platform faced many requests.
The former CEO said that when the farmers' protest was going on, the platform was asked to suspend the accounts that highlighted the protests, and journalists' accounts were also asked to suspend. Adding further, he said that they were warned that the Twitter India office will be shut down and employees' homes will be raided.
The ex-Chief Executive Officer said that India is a big market for Twitter, but the government warned that Twitter India will be shut down. He also alleged pressure from the government. The interview went viral on social media with the critics of the BJP widely sharing the clips.
With a broken smile, Jack Dorsey, former Twitter CEO said that India is a democratic country and we faced the pressure despite this. He made sensational claims in his interview with the popular YouTube channel Breaking Points.
"India is a country that had many requests of us around the farmers' protest, around particular journalists that were critical of the government and it manifested in ways such as we will shut Twitter down in India', which is a very large market for us," the ex-Twitter CEO said.
