Infighting Ruins TRS In Khammam

Khammam has always been the Achelles' heel for the ruling TRS. This is one district, where the ruling TRS has consistently failed to perform. In 2018 elections too, the party's performance was below par. Intense groupism is said to be the main reason for the party's failure to do well in Khammam.

The TRS in Khammam is divided between three prominent leaders. Each leader is trying to undercut the other leader. The first faction is headed by senior politician Tummala Nageshwara Rao. A minister for years, Tummala lost the election in 2014 and 2018 assembly elections. In 2014, he lost to young Puvvada Ajay. However, Tummala later joined the TRS, became an MLC and was made a minister. In 2018, he lost to Kandada Upender Reddy of Congress. Reddy later joined the TRS and reduced Tummala to insignificance.

The other faction is led by former MP Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy, who joined the TRS from the YSRCP. However, he was not suitably rehabilitated in the party and has not been given any key post. He is said to be sulking. Meanwhile, Puvvada Ajay, the transport minister in KCR cabinet, is the leader of the third group. He is trying to undercut the other two leaders.

Due to the group rivalry, the TRS is in deep trouble in Khammam district. Even KCR's best efforts have failed to change the situation. Sources say KCR had given up on the senior leaders, who he blames for the party's poor show in Khammam. He is said to be favouring Ajay Puvvada as he would become an important leader if KTR is made the CM in future. As a result, the groupism in the party is only growing in Khammam.
