Internal squabbles to cost TDP Adoni seat

Intense groupism and game of oneupmanship appears to be threatening the prospects of the Telugu Desam Party in Adoni assembly constituency. There is a battle for supremacy going on between senior party leader Meenakshi Naidu and his arch rival and a Boya BC community representative Gudise Lakshmi.

Though the constituency was formed way back in 1952, it was always represented by non-Boyas. The fact is that the Boyas constitute the majority in the constituency. In 2004, however, Chandrababu Naidu gave the party ticket to Gudise Lakshmi. But, she lost the election by over 21000 votes. Since then Meenakshi Naidu got the party ticket.

This time around, there is intense competition among both Meenakshi Naidu and Gudise Lakshmi for the ticket. The Boyas, who otherwise form the bulwark of the TDP in Rayalaseema, have threatened to leave the party if the ticket is not given to Boyas. However, Meenakshi Naidu too is said to be quite adamant.

Meanwhile, five other leaders, including minority leader Fakhruddin are said to be trying for the TDP ticket. Party boss Chandrababu Naidu has made several attempts to bring a patch-up but failed. It remains to be seen if he succeeds in bringing the warring groups together in the coming months. Otherwise, Adoni could see a TDP defeat not so much because of the YSRCP strength, but due to the internal squabbles of the TDP.
