IPL: Current Season Failed to Impress as previous ones!

The Indian Premier League is the most successful tournament in the world. Banking on the success and craze the previous seasons enjoyed the ongoing season which marks the 15th season started last month. The season started hoping for bigger success and viewership than ever.

But the reality is different as the viewership of IPL took a massive dip. This is a development that no one would have thought of. The shocking news is that even the opening weeks of the tournament failed to create a big impact on the viewership. As a result, the viewership fell by around 33 percent.

Compared to the TV rating charts recorded in the 2020 and 2021 seasons, the ongoing season saw a decline of around 30 percent in terms of the charts. The previous two seasons had impressed and entertained the audience and fans big time, unlike the current season.

Looking at the reason for this is that the big names in the tournament had bagged the trophy in 2020 and 2021. Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings won the trophies in the 2020 and 2021 seasons respectively. 2020 season was held when the Covid had hit the world and the people across teh world were confined to their homes.

The 2021 edition of the season saw similar scenes with partial lockdowns and restrictions. As a result, the tournament managed to create TV ratings in the past two seasons with the opening weeks seeing good numbers.

Looking at the current season, both CSK and MI could not record a single win and the small teams are easily beating the big teams. The fan bases of the teams started to lose interest in the matches. On the other hand, the remaining matches are not that interesting and entertaining.

Another big reason behind the dip is the release of the much-awaited magnum opus RRR. While RRR was released on March 25, the IPL was started the next day. RRR fever took over the nation and people loved the film and rushed to the theatre. Experts say that RRR mania had gripped the nation for close to three weeks. With big films like KGF 2 and Beast releasing, the numbers might drop further.
