AIADMK Chief J Jayalalithaa has been disqualified as MLA following her conviction and 4 years jail sentence in connection with Rs 66.65 crore disproportionate assets case. Election Commission has released a statement in this regard and informed that it is ready to conduct a by-poll in Srirangam assembly segment which was represented by the Iron Lady till now.

As per rules, Jayalalithaa cannot contest elections for a period of 10 years and this include Assembly polls in 2016. She is first Chief Minister to face disqualification following the Supreme Court verdict in 2013 that a person who is either convicted or sentenced to jail even for a day stands disqualified to contest any election for a period of 6 years from the date of jail imprisonment. This means Jaya can't contest polls for 10 years unless she gets a relief in Supreme Court.

Jayalalithaa's bail plea would come up for hearing in Supreme Court tomorrow. AIADMK workers and supporters are hopeful that Apex court would grant bail to Amma.
