Is Chief Minister Trying to White Wash Gang-Rape Issue?
By: Tupaki Desk | 13 April 2022 6:59 AM GMTMamata Banerjee-ruled West Bengal saw some tense scenes over an alleged gang rape issue. A Class 9 student reportedly getting subjected to a gang rape had grabbed everyone's attention and the opposition started to attack the government on the much-talked-about issue.
While the issue had grabbed everyone's attention, Chief Minister Mamata made shocking comments that there might be a possible affair between the accused and victim and this angle cannot be ruled out. Such comments from a woman Chief Minister against a woman victim were not expected by anyone.
Given the fact that the accused in the case happens to be the son of TMC netha, everyone doubted if Mamata wanted to dilute the case and shield the accused. Whenever such incidents happen anywhere in the country, Mamata condemns them and demands strict punishment for the culprits.
Unlike every time, Mamata sounded like she is questioning the kin of the victim over the delay in filing a police complaint. The way she raised a doubt that there might be a love affair issue in the case did not go well with many and the opinion of TMC covering up the issue got strength.
One wonders what made the Chief Minister and TMC leaders allegedly try to whitewash the heinous crime, even though the accused has relations with the ruling TMC. Women activists and bodies that work for the women's cause are lashing out at the CM for her comments.
National Commission for Women (NCW) chief Rekha Sharma also joined the list of critics of Mamata Benerjee and expressed her shock over the comments made by Mamata and asked what's the need to question the victim.
Mamata Banerjee is a woman and it's sad and unexpected to hear such shocking comments against another woman from her. I wonder if she could not understand the pain of the victim?. It is not good on her part, Rekha Sharma said.
Looking at the case, a class 9 student, who is around 14 years was reportedly gang-raped in Nadia district in West Bengal. The family members say that a TMC leader's son was behind this and they want a comprehensive probe. It is also believed that the accused had burnt the body of the victim to tamper with the evidence.
