Is One Nation - One Poll Next?

Once the Article 370 was scrapped, there were widespread rumours that it could be Ayodhya Ram Mandir and Common civil code next. It was widely believed that Modi-Shah combine will take up these two things. But, if one heard Prime Minister Modi's speech from the ramparts of the Red Fort, these two did not figure anywhere in his speech. Instead, the Prime Minister focused on 'one state – one nation.' In his speech Modi called for building a new India and said that almost every party has supported the scrapping of Article 370. Terming the abrogation of Article 370 as a gift to the people of Jammu and Kashmir, he said just as we have one constitution for the whole country, it is time to have one election for the country. He said the spirit of one nation – one policy has helped in rolling out GST. Similarly, the nation should have just one election.

When Prime Minister says something from the ramparts of the Red Fort, it means there would be a concrete action plan to turn the promise into reality. Remember Swachch Bharat was announced from the ramparts of the Red Fort. So was the Pradhan Mantri Adarsh Gram Yojana. So, one can safely expect that 'One Nation – one election' could soo be a reality. News reports say that the Government is doing a lot of homework on the issue and have already collected the opinionsof various parties on the issue.
