The schools are set to reopen in Andhra Pradesh from August 16 in both the government and the private sectors. But, there are doubts as to whether this will be a smooth affair, especially because of the restrictions and conditions imposed by the YS Jagan Mohan Reddy government on the management of the schools.

According to the government rules, the students have to be dropped to the schools and taken back home by the parents only. No auto rickshaws or rickshaws would be allowed. The school vans may also not operate services as the government has asked the school managements to limit the occupancy to just 50 per cent. Similarly, classes are allowed for only 20 students. This means that a class of 60 students may have to be held in three different shifts. Also, the teachers will have to ensure that the students do not exchange pens, pencils, tiffin boxes and other material.

Another condition stipulates that schools can be opened in an area only if the cases are less than 10 per cent. The school management will have to get two students and one teacher every week to check if there are any Covid cases. These students have to be chosen on a random basis. Also, everyday, each student will have to be screened thermally.

Even if a single case is reported, the school will have to be closed. All these make running the educational institutions very difficult, say the representatives of the school managements. They feel that even the night curfew has been extended in the state. Given this, the reopening of the schools may not be a good idea, some managements feel.
