Is Telangana In For Major Power Crisis?

But, the Telangana Government is also not in a position to hike the power tariff. As result, the Discoms are exploring ways and means to mop up additional revenues so that it they could meet the power needs of the state.
According power officials, the state has already crossed its peak demand of 12000 mega watts. If the same trend continues, then the Telangana's peak demand could touch 16 mega watts. At the time of the formation of the Telangana state, the total power consumtion was 6578 mega watts. Within six years, the power consumption during the peak time has doubled without producing addition mega watt.
Already, both Kaleshwaram and Tummilla LIS on Tungabhadra are guzzling power as they are lifting water to great heights. More industrial units and more housing constructions also mean that the power needs are ever growing . The power connections in all user categories were just 70 lakh at the time of the formation of Telangana state. Now, the number has gone up to 11045000 connections. The number of high power consumption bore well power connections are around 24.12 lakh connections. Similarly, power connections for malls and business establishments in the commercial category has gone up to 13.77 lakh. In addition, there are 97000 industrial connections. The financial deficit of the Discoms is around Rs 11000 crore. There could be a sudden implosion within the electricity department and this could lead to a major crisis, warn experts.
