s Modi planning something really big for the 2024 elections? Is he planning to bring liquor under the Central Government and promulgate prohibition across the country? Is he trying to make this an election issue and sweep the Opposition off its feet?
Highly placed sources say that Modi-Shah combine is seriously thinking of bringing total prohibition across the country. Already prohibition is in force in states like Gujarat and Bihar. Both the states have managed to continue their developmental and welfare schemes despite not getting any revenue from liquor on account of prohibition. Modi now is planning to replicate the same across the country. Not just that! He is also likely to get support from YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, who is a passionate advocate of prohibition. If prohibition becomes an electoral issue, Modi will get massive support from women voters as in most states, it is the women who are in the forefront of anti-liquor agitation.
A team specially constituted by Modi is said to be working the nitty gritty of prohibition across the country. If this happens, the states will be losing huge chunk of revenue. After all, liquor and VAT on petrol are the two major income sources for the state governments. Modi is also said to be working on plans to compensate the state governments for the losses caused by total prohibition.
