However, the IT department recently unearthed bogus refund claims. With this, the IT officials dug deeper into the case, and various new aspects were found. There is an IT employee in Hyderabad. The employee gets an annual income of Rs 80 lakhs. But the techie claimed that he gave Rs 40 lakhs to a political party. However, the concerned authorities asked him to present the required details. This helped the authorities in unearthing the scam.
The IT department became alert to this and started keeping a tab on the fraudsters who are earning big amounts with wrong claims and getting refunds. It is said that the IT department officials found fraudsters who are earning money with fake claims in big numbers in Telugu states. So a special focus was put on the two states. With this, the authorities are cross-checking the refunds claimed by the taxpayers.
As part of this, details and documents of the taxpayers who claimed refunds over Rs 1 lakh would be checked again and they would be sent notices in this regard. They might be asked to submit the details. The details would be checked again. If the details are found correct then there would be no issues. If details are found fake then action would be taken against them. The officials are also gearing up to identify the tax practitioners who are creating fake documents.
