Any person living in India has the right to reside or move in the country freely. It's their fundamental right and the fundamental rights cannot be hindered, the Supreme Court said in a judgement.

The Apex Court made these comments during the hearing of the petition filed by journalist Rahmat Khan who was asked not to enter or return to the Amaravati region in Maharashtra for one year.

Such orders can be passed only on special occasions like protecting the law and order in particular situations, the Supreme Court said.

As per the petitioner Rahmat Khan, he was directed not to enter Amravati region for one year. The Deputy Commissioner of Police issued the orders, Rahmat Khan told the court.

Rahmat Khan, a famous journalist had said that he is smelling a big conspiracy behind the issuance of such orders as a few people want him not to file Right to Information Act PILs.

The bench of the Supreme Court that comprises Justices Indira Banerjee and V Ramasubramanian heard the petition and made these observations.

Rahmat Khan is known for filing RTI applications on the irregularities in the fundings received by madrassas.
