However, Majority of the public representative feel imposing Tax on Handlooms Industry is unacceptable. Why because, It's an Industry most number of people in the country are dependent after Agriculture. Already, Handloom Workers are finding it difficult to see any profits and committing suicide as well. Now, Imposing tax on the material used for handloom products will be a huge burden on the weavers. If the tax slab fixed by GST Council is implemented, Handlooms Industry will never be able to recover.
AP Opposition Leader YS Jaganmohan Reddy wrote a letter to Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley mentioning about the ground realities about the Handlooms Industry. He pointed out, 'Scores of people are dependent on handlooms directly and indirectly. This industry willn't survive if tax recommended by GST Council is levied. Materials used by weavers must be included in the list of products attracting minimum tax slab. Tax exemption should be given for handloom products'.
