Jail For Driving While Using Phone? Too Harsh: HC
By: Tupaki Desk | 20 Feb 2019 11:12 AM GMTTelangana High Court differed with the judgement passed by Cyberabad IV Special Metropolitan Magistrate in a case related to using smartphone while driving vehicle.
Cyberabad IV Special Metropolitan Magistrate sentenced a person identified as MV Bharadwaj for four days apart from imposing Rs 500 fine. The verdict of the lower court was challenged in the High Court by P Ramakanth.
High Court felt the jail sentence awarded to Mr.Bharadwaj too harsh. 'If an individual faces jail term for a minor offence, The society starts treating him like a convict. Imposing fine and issuance of warning is more than enough for using cell phone while driving,' opined HC.
Telangana Police have been acting tough on small offences as well. Hundreds of drunken drive cases and traffic violation cases have been filed on regular basis. Stringent punishments have been offered by the courts and a lot of youth have been facing jail term due to lack of awareness over the consequences.
