Ever since PM Narendra Modi announced demonetization drive, Jan Dhan Accounts have been flooded with deposits in denominations of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes. As much as Rs 21,000 crore have been deposited in these accounts in the past 13 days.

Till November 9th, The balance in 25.5 crore Jan Dhan accounts was Rs 45,636.61 crore. Post the ban on currency, The balance has gone up to Rs 66,636 crore. Highest deposits in Jan Dhan Accounts were recorded in West Bengal.

Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojna (PMJDY) was launched on August 28th, 2014. Although the deposit limit was just Rs 50,000, Many of the account holders began saving up to Rs 2.5 lakh after November 8th announcement. Taxmen were enquiring how the such huge cash was deposited into Zero-Balance Accounts all of a sudden. Government warns account holders will loose subsidies like LPG Gas Cylinder and other benefits if they were caught misusing.
