February 24th, 1948: Born in Melukote town, Mysuru district. Her parents Jayaraman and Vedavalli named their child as Komalavalli. She is from an orthodox Tamil Brahmin Family.

1950: Jayaraman passed away. Vedavalli shifted to her parents place in Bangalore along with Jayalalithaa and her brother Jayakumar.

1952: Vedavalli came back to Madras to find a job but Jaya stayed with her aunt in Bangalore and studied at Bishop Cottons Girls School.

1958: Jayalalithaa shifted to Madras to live with her Mother after the marriage of her aunt. She joined in Sacred Heart Presentation Convent. She also learnt Bharatanatyam, Kathak and Carnatic Music.

1964: To overcome the financial crisis in the family, She has given her her wish to become a lawyer and became an actress. Kannada flick 'Chinnada Gombe' marked her film debut.

1965: Jaya's first Tamil flick 'Venniraadai' is a blockbuster. She got the opportunity to act opposite Kollywood top star MG Ramachandran in the same year.

1971: Jayalalithaa's Mother passed away

1973: She again teamed up with MGR after a gap for few years. 'Pattikaattu Ponnaiya' is their last film together. This film was shot and released after MGR walked out of DMK to launch AIADMK.

Till 1980: Jayalalithaa ruled the roost for around 15 years. Over 100 out of 140-odd films she has done were super hits. She emerged as one of the highest-paid actresses in the country.

'Nadhiyal Thedi Vandha Kadal' was her last Tamil feature film. However, The last film of her as female lead was 'Nayakudu Vinayakudu' (Telugu).

1982: Jayalalithaa resolved her minor differences with MGR and joined AIADMK.

1983: Appointed as AIADMK propaganda secretary

1984: Elected to Rajya Sabha

1986: MGR sacked Jayalalithaa from all party posts after she began growing as a power centre in the party.

1987: MGR passed away. AIADMK split into two. While one group remained with Jayalalithaa, Other group was with MGR's wife Janaki.

1989: Jaya's Group won 27 Assembly seats in Assembly polls. Whereas, Janaki's Group managed only two. Janaki voluntarily gave up, allowing Jaya to carry forward MGR's legacy. Jayalalithaa was insulted by DMK Members during the Budget Session in Assembly. She pledged not to return to the house again until she becomes the Chief Minister.

1991: Alliance with Congress post the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi, Jayalalithaa formed the Government.

1996: AIADMK faced defeat in Assembly polls. Based on corruption cases filed by DMK, She was arrested and sent to prison. She, however, was acquitted from corruption charges in 2000. Then, Janata Party chief Subramanian Swamy moved court against the illegal assets amassed by Jayalalithaa.

1998-1999: AIADMK alliance with NDA and fall out within an year made it a Congress ally. Then, NDA formed alliance with DMK to form the government.

2000: Court bars Jayalalithaa from contesting Assembly poll after being convicted in Pleasant Stay Hotel case and TANSI Land Acquisition Case.

2001: AIADMK wins Assembly Polls (196 seats out of 234)

September 2001: Supreme Court disapproves Jayalalithaa's appointment as CM. So, She steps down and makes O Panneerselvam as CM

December 2001-March 2002: Court gives clear chit to her in Pleasant Stay Hotel case and TANSI Land Acquisition Case. She becomes CM again.

2004 & 2006: AIADMK loses Lok Sabha polls and Assembly elections

2009: DMK-Congress alliance wins majority of Lok Sabha seats

2011: AIADMK wins 203 out of 234 Assembly seats

May 2014: AIADMK sweeps Lok Sabha polls. It won 37 out of 39 seats.

September 2014: Court sentences Jayalalithaa to four years in prison and Rs 100 crore fine. She went to prison and O Panneersevam served as CM.

October 2014: Supreme Court grants bail to her

May 2015: Karnataka High Court acquits Jayalalithaa from all he charges. She takes charge as CM again.

May 2016: Jayalalithaa creates history by being the first Tamil Nadu CM to be in power for two consecutive terms. AIADMK won 134 out of 234 seats in Assembly polls.

September 22nd, 2016: Jayalalithaa hospitalized

November 19th, 2016: She was shifted to normal war from ICU

December 4th, 2016: Jayalalithaa suffered cardiac arrest

December 5th, 2016: The 6-time Tamil Nadu CM passed away
