Justice NV Ramana to take oath as 48th CJI today!
By: Tupaki Desk | 24 April 2021 5:15 AM GMTThe senior-most judge of the country's top court, the Supreme Court, Justice N V Ramana is all set to take oath as the 48th Chief Justice of India(CJI). The oath ceremony would take place today.
The Honorable President of India Ram Nath Kovind would administer the oath of office to Justice NV Ramana at the Supreme Court today at 11 AM. The tenure of previous CJI AS Bobde came to end on Friday.
SA Bobde recommended Justice NV Ramana as his successor after the Union Law Minister urged him to recommend a Justice, who can fill his place. After Bobde's recommendation, the Law Ministry confirmed his appointment and issued a notification in this regard.
Justice NV Ramana will be serving as the CJI for a term of over 16 months. He will retire as the 48th Chief Justice of India on August 26, 2022.
Mr. NV Ramana, who hails from Andhra Pradesh belongs to an Agriculture household. He was appointed as a permanent judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court in 2000. In 2013, he was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court. In 2014, he was appointed as the Justice of the Supreme Court.
Justice NV Ramana has led the five-judge bench that heard the petitions on revoking the special status of Jammu and Kashmir and petitions pertaining to the ban of 5G services in Jammu and Kashmir.
Justice NV Ramana had a fallout with Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy after the latter accused him of manipulating the judges of the Andhra Pradesh high court.
The Chief Minister even wrote a letter to the then Chief Justice of India, SA Bobde, accusing NV Ramana of trying to stop the policies announced by his government. The in-house inquiry gave him a clean chit in the probe.
