Why Is First Night A Hell For Kanjarbhat Girls?

The fantasies are completely different from the realities of life and everything will not be just like our films depict the first night scene. A beautifully dressed bridegroom walking into the bedroom carrying a glass of milk and the bride will be waiting there for her. The director cuts the scene at the right moment and shows some morning sunrise. Just keep aside this boring stuff, and talk about something very serious that is happening in India.

The first night is literally a nightmare for Kanjarbhat community girls in Maharashtra. Not even a single girl will feel that it is going to be a beautiful memory in her life to cherish. The reason is that the first night is more about traditional virginity test with bleeding marks on the bed sheet than having 'pleasure' with the husband.

The parents of both sides will be eagerly waiting outside the bedroom for the news of 'bloodstains' on the white bed sheet. If there are blood stains, then girl passed the test and everything goes fine. The information has to be intimated to the Panchayat elders as well. If the test turns positive, the entire family celebrates the occasion by distributing biryani packets.

What happens if there are no blood stains on the white bed sheet? They will assume that the girl is not a virgin and she had sexual encounters with men earlier. They will drag the girl a commonplace in the middle of the village. They will tie her to a pole and beat her with slippers and shoes. The community elders will impose a fine on the girl's family as well.

Kanjarbhat community hails from Rajasthan but they have migrated to Maharashtra a hundred years ago. Their barbaric acts towards the girls in the name of virginity test is drawing huge criticism from all sections. Youth from the community started protesting against the ignorant traditions in the recent past.
