Know why people are burning copies of that newspaper?

Gone are the days when the media set the agenda and the people blindly followed it without questioning. Even if the writings were offensive, the protests were muted. But, times are a changing. The people are reacting very strongly when the media hurts their sentiments and ignores their feelings.

The case in point is the recent cartoon in Eenadu. The cartoon lampooned the soaps made from cow dung. The cartoon ridiculed the Pancha Gavya (the five cow-based products used for health and purification) and this has angered the villagers in several parts of Nizamabad. Farmers, ruralites from various places have been burning the copies of Eenadu and are banning Eenadu from their villages. Recently, the villagers of Mothe and Brahmanpalli of Lingampalle mandal of Kamareddy district have burnt copies of Eenadu daily and have decided not to allow the paper into their villages. The villagers objected to the insulting of Hindu religious beliefs which regard the cow as sacred.

Sources say this movement is spreading in various parts of the district. The people are saying that they have been using cow-based products from ages and are benefiting from their usage. The cartoon in Eenadu is highly insulting and the Eenadu management should apologise for the insensitive cartoon, they say.
