A leading firm that deals with the health system policies of various countries has done comprehensive research on the life expectancy in India and the outcome of the study is encouraging. Compared to a few decades back, life expectancy had increased largely, the research found.

The Asia Pacific Observatory on Health Systems and Policies, which is known for making collaborative partnerships with the governments on health systems, had said that the average life expectancy had gone up in India. Compared to the 1970s, the current expectancy is high.

The outcome of the research is that, as of 2020, the life expectancy in India stood at 69.6 years, which is around 70 years. The average life expectancy had increased for both men and women as per the study. Back in the 1970s, the life expectancy was just 47.7 years.

If we draw a comparison between the 1970s and 2020, the average expectancy went up by 24 and 20 years for women and men respectively. This is a good sign of progress that shows that the medical sector and health industries are doing exceptionally well than ever.

The good news is that, even after reaching the age of 60, Indians can have an expectancy of over a decade. This is for both men and women. Over the decades, Indians have been seeing a rise in their expectancy, which had increased to more than two long decades now, the research said.

The reasons for that are, the natural immunity and resistance Indians enjoy compared to many nations. Despite the dense population of India, fewer Covid cases were reported in the country compared to the western nations due to the same reasons.

In addition to this, the medical schemes and policies the governments had brought in the past and the new policies that are coming are largely benefiting the policyholders to get treatment when they require it.

While the overall life expectancy has increased in India, a few states have reported higher life expectancy. Looking at the list, the largest state in terms of population- Uttar Pradesh is at the top, followed by Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Bihar, Assam, and Andhra Pradesh.
