In the wake of honor killings the Madras High Court has directed the state government to set up a special cell in each district to investigate complaints filed by inter-caste couples. The HC also orders to start a 24-hour helpline for them.
The High Court announced the decision after it heard the petition on a case on dishonour killings in Tamil Nadu. The court also issued guidelines to government on include setting up safe, short-stay homes and steps to counsel parents who oppose inter-caste marriages.
In last than three years, Tamil Nadu has witnessed 81 incidents of honour killings. Recently a Dalit youth was murdered in broad daylight in a busy road junction at Udumalpet near Coimbatore.
