Rasagulla needs no introduction. The syrupy dessert which is very popular for its taste in the Indian subcontinent now turned as Centre of debate. Two states Odisha and West Bengal vying to claim the patent rights of the sweet. As per reports the west bengal state government has prepared a plan to establish its supremacy over the sweet.

The Science and Technology department of the West bengal state government has started the process to approach GI authentication of Rasogolla and it is set to present the research-based counter claim before the Union Commerce Ministry soon. Chief minister Mamata Bhenarjee also agreed for the proceedings over the issue.

Bengali's says that spongy white Rasgulla introduced in West Bengal in 1868 by a Kolkata-based confectioner named Nobin Chandra Das. Other side historians of Odisha says that the rasgulla originated in Puri, as Khira Mohana, which later evolved into the Pahala rasgulla. It has been traditionally offered as bhog to goddess Lakshmi at Jagannath Temple, Puri.
