Guptill said he had no idea he was close to De Villiers' record before umpire Richard Illingworth mentioned it.
However, Guptill was on mark to record the fastest fifty by a New Zealander beating his captain Brendon McCullum's by one ball.This is Sri Lanka's third-lowest ODI score against New Zealand.
