After a long time, director Vijaybhaskar joined hands with Venkatesh and pulled hero Ram into his kitty before directing the remake of Hindi flick ‘Bol Bachhan’. Let us see where this latest melodrama is upto.
The CONTENT:
Rahim (Ram) loses his house in a Court battle and is disappointed as he wants to get his sister Saina (Anjali) married to a good bride-groom in that ancestral house. His fatherÂ’s friend Baabai (MS Narayana) comes to his rescue and asks him to shift base to Bheemarajapuram where Balaram Raju (Venky) runs the whole village like a Pedarayudu. After Rahim saves a boy drenching in a pool by forcibly opening a locked out temple, he gets applause of everyone but Balaram RajuÂ’s brother-in-law Nagaraju (Posani Krishnamurali) objects to it. Fearing a rift in village, MS NarayanaÂ’s son Ali lies RahmanÂ’s name to Ram.
For the courage shown by Rahim aka Ram, Balarama Raju appoints him as a supervisor in his khandan. Later BalaramÂ’s sister Meenakshi (Shazhan Padamsee) comes to village and falls flat for Ram/Rahim. One day with Balaram noticing Rahim performing prayers at mosque, Ram lies that he got another brother named Rahim who looks exactly like him except for a clean shave. So, how far Rahim will manage like Ram and vice versa, and what happens when Balram proposes to Saina after coming to know about RahimÂ’s love with Meenkashi is the rest of story.
The EFFORT :
On-Screen:
Venkatesh is as usual good with his acting and his butler English and misplaced words pave way for a laugh riot in theatres. But his role is full of regular emotions only and there is no need of any extra effort for the acting.
If youths are expecting too much from Ram, then they will get little disappointed as his energy is quite toned down in the movie. Though he got tremendous scope to prove his comic timing, one wonders if Ram lost interest in this flick halfway.
Except shaking her legs in a song, Anjali is quite bad in Masala with some mediocre expressions. Even in a song, she looked plastic with no proper mood on her face. The less we talk about Shazahn Padamsee is better. She looks like a Junior artist in many scenes, while in that beach song she is at par with the dancers in the background.
Posani and MS Narayana are wasted in poorly written roles, and they too didnÂ’t took those miniscule characters seriously. At the same time Ali impressed with some good laughs, while Kovai Sarala unwinds her mark by even exposing her navel (quite awkward to write even) in the role of a bar dancer.
Off-Screen:
Director Vijayabhaskar has done good job in transferring all the scenes from Hindi Bol Bachan, but at times failed to make comedy sequences interesting. However he shared enough screen space for Venky and Ram such that fans will not get hurt. Though the dialogue work for Venky and some comic skits are fine, they will hurt you at parts due to directorÂ’s poor handling.
Cinematographer Andrew who showed promising work in Prabhas’ ‘Darling’ has done a below average job for this flick. Especially the way he shot a couple of songs, one in beach and one in Japan disappoints a lot. But in rest of the scenes, his work is okay. Once again music director Thaman proved that he lost that magic touch when it comes to delivering foot tapping numbers. Though his background score is okay, he should have focused more on songs.

The MINUSES:

· Lack of gripping narration
· Artificial climax with worst visual effects
BREAKDOWN:
If someone is remaking an already hit movie, then there is chance to eliminate all the low moments and add more ‘masala’ to it. But here in Venky-Ram’s ‘Masala’ some artificial moments are added the comedy of errors making the movie not just cross that average-line. Okay, we will keep logics aside and watch the flick, but at least those larger-than-life acts should be little convincing. Suppose Venky and Ram rams their jeep into a bus and all the glasses of bus are broken, but Shazahn Padamsee sitting inside the bus is unhurt. Even logic less movies, audiences are not getting entertained by such craps these days.
One wonders why even Ram hasn’t shown energy in delivering comedy. Though he is good with antics, those are all old and tested kind which doesn’t entertain masses. As the movie progresses, one will laugh for a minute and then scratch head for another minute. Carrying popcorn in one hand, and soft drink in another hand we can enjoy the ‘Masala’, but will feel sad if we expect some hardcore cinematic moments. But at box-office, the movie may not serve like a delicacy for weeks as its potentiality is quite low to run for a long time.
In the movie, whenever Venkatesh uses butler and misplaced English, his assistant Jaya Prakash applauds him with his own butler English. Like his praising words, ‘Terrible Sir, Horrible Sir, Bull Sh**t sir’, we have to call ‘Masala’ in the same way.
