MHA says no nationwide lockdown, instead directs States

As a result of the second wave of Coronavirus spreading its wings, India made it a habit of seeing new highs in Coronavirus infections and fatalities over the past few weeks.
In the wake of India seeing record single-day infections and casualties, a few states have already imposed night curfews, lockdown, and restrictions to tackle the spread of the deadly virus.
A few states opting to impose restrictions has kickstarted a debate on another nationwide lockdown, as imposing lockdown can help in bringing down the new Coronavirus infections and casualties.
Against this backdrop, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs ruled out that no nationwide lockdown will be imposed and directed the States/ Union Territories to implement containment measures to restrict the virus spread.
'In an order issued today, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) directed all States and Union Territories (UTs) to consider the containment measures, as had been conveyed in the advisory of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), dated 25.4.2021, for immediate implementation based on the assessment of the situation. It asked the States and UTs to implement the necessary containment measures, under the relevant provisions of the Disaster Management (DM) Act, 2005,' MHA guidelines read.
The MHA in its guidelines said containment measures should be imposed in districts with either more than 10 percent Covid positivity rate and over 60 percent bed occupancy in the last week
In the past 24 hours, India once again reported more than three lakh Coronavirus cases with 3,86,452 cases. With this, the cumulative caseload has risen to 1,87,62,976. Including 3,498 new casualties, total fatalities zoomed to 2,08,330.
On the other hand, the active cases in the country stood at 31,70,228. With as many as 2,97,540 people beating the virus in the past 24 hours, a total of 1,53,84,418 patients have been declared cured and discharged from the hospitals so far.
