Modi Disappoints Jagan On AP Council Abolition
By: Tupaki Desk | 24 March 2020 12:40 PM ISTIt's back to square one for YS Jagan in Andhra Pradesh. His plans to abolish the legislative council have hit a road block albeit temporarily. This only means that he has to wait for some more time to get this obstacle removed from his way.
The Lok Sabha has been adjourned sine die in a hurry in view of the spread of Corona and it did not take up the AP Government's request to abolish the council. As a result, the request will have to wait for the next session.
The abolition of the council is not just a prestige issue for YS Jagan. It is also a chief obstacle in getting key bills like those pertaining to three capitals passed. He is unable to even get the bill relating to the English medium in government schools passed in the Council due to the majority that the TDP enjoys. So, he specifically took up the issue of the abolition of the council with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. However, Corona crisis made matters worse and Jagan's hopes were washed way when the Parliament was adjourned in advance. Now, one does not know when the Lok Sabha woould be convened and when the AP's request would be taken up.
So, Jagan may have to wait for some more time to get the council abolished. As of now, he has his hands full tackling the Corona crisis.
