Narendra Modi was elected leader of the BJP parliamentary party, paving the way to his becoming the Prime Minister.At a meeting held on Tuesday, Modi's name was proposed by party patriarch LK Advani and seconded by other leaders, including Murli Manohar Joshi, Venkaiah Naidu, Nitin Gadkari, Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley.

Modi arrived to Parliament at 12 PM, touched his forehead on the ground outside the entrance. With folded hands he greets all and then touches Advani's feet before taking his seat on the stage.Advani got emotional while addressing his party MPÂ’s.

Advani said, “I had tears in my eyes when India became independent, then I had tears when emergency ended and when Narendra bhai greeted me today, I got tears in my eyes as it is an historic moment of happiness.”

Modi said, “I thank you all that you have unanimously given me a new responsibility. If Vajpayee ji would have been here it would have been better. This is the temple of democracy. Position is not important, the responsibility bestowed on us by 125 crore Indians is more important. The son of a poor man is standing in front of you people today, this is the power of democracy.’’

The Modi-led BJP won a staggering 282 seats in the 545-member Lok Sabha, becoming the first non-Congress party since independence to get a majority on its own.
