Gujarat Polls 2017: How Modi's Strategy worked?
By: Tupaki Desk | 18 Dec 2017 1:15 PM GMTBJP has been holding on to power in Gujarat since the past 22 years. Whereas, 2017 Assembly Polls have been a litmus test for Narendra Modi. Patidar Movement, Demonetisation and GST posed a threat to BJP this time. In 2012 Polls, BJP won 115 seats in the 182-member Assembly. Whereas, It managed to win 99 seats in 2017 elections. Though the majority has dropped, It can be said that BJP & Modi has done many things rightly for posting sixth consecutive win.
When the Election Campaign began, PM Modi and Gujarat CM spoke about the development model. Whereas, The strategy of ruling party changed completely after Rahul Gandhi, Patidar leader Hardik Patel, Dalit Leader Jignesh Meywani and OBC Leader Alpesh Thakur entered the scene. Though BJP Leaders kept saying 150 seats is what they have been aiming, They knew the fact that even obtaining magic figure won't be a cakewalk.
Narendra Modi was able to convince Gujarat voters that benefits of Note Ban and Demonetisation will be visible in the long term. He used the Hindutva advantage at the right time and mocked Rahul Gandhi's temple visits. When Rahul was unanimously elected as Party Chief, PM opined Congress can only guarantee Aurangzeb Rule. He linked Ayodhya to Election Results and made good use of Kapil Sebal's comments. Last but not the least, Modi went to the extent of accusing Congress Leaders of offering supari to Pakistan to get rid of him. He even told Pakistan wants Ahmed Patel to be CM of Gujarat.
Even few comments made by Congress Leaders such as Mani Shankar Aiyar benefitted BJP. Modi used the 'neech aadmi' remark against him to his advantage. 'Believe Me..Who will do your work if not me who is in Delhi? Will you extend your support to Me in this situation?,' he said in the public meetings to make the sentiment work.
All these factors contributed to the victory of BJP in Gujarat Assembly Polls. Had if Modi didn't take part in campaign or didn't camp in Gujarat, The situation would have been completely different.
