Modi Steps Back After Severe Backlash

Journalists, Opposition Parties and Netizens slammed the Union Government for trying to ruin the freedom of press.
The backlash is so severe that Prime Minister Narendra Modi intervened in the matter and cancelled the circular issued by his own Government. Quickly, I&B Minister Smriti Irani announced she is willing to work collectively with the Journalists to fight against the menace. 'Together we can fight the menace of 'fake news' & uphold ethical journalism. Interested journalists and/or organisations may feel free to meet me at @MIB_India,' he said.
Controversial Circular of I&B Ministry:
i) Accreditation of a journalist will be suspended for six months in the first violation if the publication or telecast of fake news is confirmed.
ii) If it's a second violation, Suspension of accreditation will be for 1 year.
iii) The Journalist will lose his/her accreditation permanently if proven guilty of spreading fake news for the third time.
