Fact Sheet: Why Dhoni Took Match Ball?

Speculations of Mahendra Singh Dhoni's retirement surfaced after the defeat of India in the 3rd and final ODI against England. Especially, Rumour-mongers began highlighting the Former Skipper collecting the ball from Umpire after the match to make everyone take their prediction seriously. They had even mentioned how Mr.Cool collected a stump used in his last Test Match in Australia before announcing his retirement.

Team India Head Coach Ravi Shastri brushed aside the rumours in circulation. He clarified Dhoni took the ball only to show it to Bharat Arun, who is the Bowling Coach of Team India. The idea of MSD is to make the Support Staff study about the condition of the ball after 45 overs have been bowled in England.

Dhoni quit Test Cricket in 2014 just before the ICC ODI World Cup 2015. He played 321 ODIs and 93 T20Is so far. In his ODI Career, Dhoni scored 10,046 runs at an average of 51.25. This include 10 Centuries and 67 Fifties. He is only the 4th Indian and 12th Cricketer in the World to have score over 10,000 runs in ODIs.

Clarification from Ravi Shastri gives an impression that MS Dhoni would continue playing limited-overs cricket till the next World Cup.
