PM Narendra Modi has commissioned the most modern non-nuclear submarine the Scorpene-class INS Kalvari into the Indian Navy in Mumbai on Thursday. While dedicating the powerful submarine to the nation, Modi said "This is a fine example of the fast-growing strategic partnership between India and France."

Mazagon Dock Limited is building six Scorpene-submarine as part of the Project-75 of Indian Navy. The remaining five submarines will be delivered by the yard to the Navy by 2020. The overall length of INS Kalvri is 67.5 meters and a height of 12.3 meters. Kalvari was first put to sea on May 1, 2016, and it has undergone a comprehensive trial schedule for validating its capability. The submarine consists of 360 battery cells each weighing 750 kg to power the engine which makes it undetectable.

Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Navy chief Admiral Sunil Lanba were also present at the occasion. On the other hand, the second Scorpene submarine INS Khanderi is currently undergoing trials and it will be inducted into the Navy soon.
