NASA discovers 10 Earth-like Planets
By: Tupaki Desk | 20 Jun 2017 9:15 AM GMTNASA announced Astronomers have discovered as many as 219 new exoplanets in our Galaxy using the Kepler Space Telescope. This include 10 habitable planets similar to the Earth.
In the first phase of Kepler Mission, Around 2 lakh stars has been scanned. About 4,034 tiny blips which don't rule out the possibility of planet around a star have been detected. Out of them 49 were identified as habitable zone which means there is chance for water and life to strive on the surface.
In 2009, Kepler Space Telescope was placed into the orbit around the Sun to find out - How many stars are like Sun?, How many planets exist in our galaxy? and How many planets are in the habitable zone? In the first 4 years, Kepler managed to cover only 0.025 of the sky. May be, It will find out 'Earth 2.0' sometime in future.
