National Grid to Collapse With Shutting The Lights Off on Sunday?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi who addressed the nation via a video message has requested the countrymen to turn off the lights in their home for 9 minutes on the 5th of April at 9 pm.

"Instead, stand at your doors or in your balconies, and light candles or diyas, (or shine) torches or mobile flashlights for 9 minutes as a show of unity in the nation's fight against COVID-19 pandemic," Narendra Modi said.

Now it has been reported that the experts are in an opinion that if the lights were shut down completely across the nation, the electricity grid might collapse. Reportedly, about 10,000-12,000 MW of power demand is expected to vanish, during these 9 minutes.

So POSOCO needs to ramp down electricity supply accordingly during this time block and ramp up again once this 9-minute period is over and the baseload demand returns in full strength

If the situation is not handled accordingly, it might result in a high voltage surge, tripping the lines, causing damage to the national grid and an extended power outage as per the experts.

The same situation arrived with the Janata Curfew held on March 22nd when the national power demand dipped rapidly from 161 GW to 153GW which is 26GW less than the previous day.
