No GST exemption for TTD says Centre in Parliament
By: Tupaki Desk | 25 March 2021 11:50 AM GMTThe Union Government which showed an empty hand to Andhra Pradesh in the matters of Special Category status and Vizag Steel Plant privatisation row gave a shock to Andhra Pradesh yet again.
YSRCP MP VVijayasai Reddy asked the Union Government to withdraw the GST on the TTD board. He questioned why the Centre is imposing Goods and Services Tax(GST) on the temple trust that is bound to provide service to the devotees.
The Union government is charging taxes from the TTD on the cottages and the private hotels in the temple city where the devotees, Barring the laddus, the ingredients used in making laddus were also charged,
Replying to Vijayasai Reddy's question, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman made it clear that the TTD cannot be exempted from taxation. Her reply came as a shock to MPs and Andhra Pradesh state too.
'No Temple in the country was given an exemption from the GST Taxation. TTD cannot have separate rules in taxation.' Nirmala Sitharaman replied to YSRCP MP's question.
AP Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy had earlier requested the Centre to consider the GST exemption. But the repeated requests went in vain with the Centre making its stand clear on the issue.
