The more than 100 years grand Congress party is beaten to death almost by the Narendra Modi sarkar. The party which was reduced to its lowest ever tally of just 44 MP seats was humiliated further.Ending all speculation, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan on Tuesday formally rejected the Congress' demand for the post of leader of the Opposition (LoP).
The rules of the House specify that a party is eligible for the post only if it has at least 55 seats (10%) in the lower House. The Congress has 44 and fall short of 11.
The congress has been insisting that it should be given the status of leader of opposition even if it did not account for 1/10th of the total strength of the House. Congress President Sonia Gandhi had written to speaker Mahajan seeking the status of the Leader of Opposition to Mallikarjun Kharge who is the party's group leader in the House.
However, citing rules, Mahajan conveyed to Congress that she was not in a position to grant the party leader of opposition status as it fell short of the minimum of 55 seats required for staking claim to the post.Speaker declared that she followed rules and tradition while coming to reach this decision.
Its known that Earlier in 1980 and 1984, the then Congress governments got absolute majority and there is no Leader of Opposition then. In a letter to Sonia Gandhi, the Speaker cited rulings and precedents from 1980 and 1984, when the party was in power and there was no official LoP.
This will be a big setback for 100 year old congress party and from now there will be no stoppage for Narendra Modi and his Government;Said an analyst.
