Omicron fears put a halt to political activity in Telangana

Despite the heated political debate and spate of verbal attacks by politicians, there would be no public outreach programmes at least till March next year. The reason? The rising fears of Omicron have virtually put a stop to rallies, public meetings, protests and dharnas.

In fact the BJP planned its president Bandi Sanjay's second phase of padayatra. Sources say that has been deferred due to the rising Omicron cases. Similarly, YSRTP chief YS Sharmila too has put off her padayatra across Telangana. Even otherwise, the response to her padayatra has been on a downward spiral. Despite her best efforts, the yatra is drawing poor response. Even the TRS is planning to wait till February to plan KCR's tour of the districts.

The latest to join the deferment bandwagon is Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee chief Revanth Reddy. Already, his ambitious Rachabanda programme, aimed at targeting the TRS government on paddy procurement, irrigation, job creation and other issues, has been deferred due to the rise in the Covid cases. The Rachabanda was elaborately planned and was to take off very soon. Now it may have to wait till March. To add to this, Revanth Reddy himself tested positive for Covid. He has asked those who came in contact with him recently to test themselves. This means, Revanth would be out of action for at least a week. Sources say that the Omicron could reach its peak in mid-February or early March. So, till then no public activity could be planned, say sources.
