Petition filed to bring Kohinoor from UK to Pakistan
By: Tupaki Desk | 3 Dec 2015 3:38 PM GMTA petition has been filed in a Pakistani court asking their government to bring back precious Kohinoor diamond, the world famous precious stone. A Pakistani attorney Javed Iqbal Jaffry has filed a court petition seeking the return of the famed Koh-i-Noor diamond. In his petition the lawyer claimed that the Kohinoor diamond was actually the cultural heritage of Punjab province.
Javed Iqbal Jaffry alleged in his petition to the Lahore High Court that the UK snatched the diamond from Daleep Singh, grandson of Maharaja Ranjeet Singh, and took it to Britain. He said the diamond was moved from Lahore to Punjab. The application asks that Britain hand back the diamond, now on display in the Tower of London.
Its known that the diamond became part of the crown of incumbent Queen Elizabeth-II at the time of her crowing in 1953 and India has been trying to get from the UK. The Kohinoor was originally mined in medieval times in the Kollur mine in Andhra Pradesh's Guntur district.
The diamond was later owned by the Kakatiya Dynasty and the rulers had installed it in a temple of a Hindu goddess as her eye. Later it was moved to Moghul emperors.
After the conquest of the Punjab by the British forces, the properties of the Sikh Empire were confiscated and Kohinoor was transferred to the treasury of the British East India Company in Lahore.
The properties of the Sikh Empire were taken as war compensations by East india company and the precious diamond travelled to UK. The diamond weighs 105 carats and worth billions of rupees.India has made regular requests for the jewel's return, saying the diamond is an integral part of the country's history and culture.
