Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Atal tunnel in Himachal Pradesh, which connects Manali to Lahaul-Spiti valley. The all-weather tunnel will cut short the travel time to Leh by around five hours.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat and Army Chief General MM Naravane, as well as Himachal Chief Minister Jairam Thakur, were also present at the inaugural.

The all-weather tunnel, that is named after former Prime Minister, BJP veteran Atal Bihari Vajpayee has been built with the modern specifications. The Tunnel was built in the Pir Panjal Range of Himalayas at the altitude of around 3,000 meters.

The horseshoe-shaped single-tube tunnel which is dubbed as the longest highway construction in the world will reduce the road distance by 46km between Manali and Leh.

The tunnel was designed in a specific way that 3,000 cars and 1,500 trucks can travel a day. The vehicles in the tunnel can maintain a speed of 80kmph, which is the maximum.

The idea of constructing a tunnel in Himachal Pradesh was taken way back in 2000, by the then Prime Minister Atla Bihari Vajpayee. In 2002, a foundation stone for the access road was laid.
