Politicians Poke Their Nose Into Singareni Collieries

There is disquiet in the Singareni management what with the growing interference of the political leaders in the affairs of the company. This is a never-before problem for the management. The Singareni, which earns over Rs 5000 crore and gets profits to a tune of Rs 1000 crore besides providing direct and indirect employment to over 5.5 lakh persons, is now facing a nagging problem. The political interference is growing. If sources are to be believed, earlier, the chairperson or the directors would hardly get one or two recommendations. But, now every day, hundreds of recommendation letters are coming from the MPs, MLAs and other leaders. There is a growing feeling that the directors, chairperson and the management is losing its independence.

The total amount allocated for the Corporate social responsibility (CSR) department to take up developmental and welfare activities in its area of operations is Rs 32 crore. But, the demands for developmental works put forth by the politicians are worth over a whopping Rs 60 crore. The demands are from the leaders in the Karimnagar, Adilabad, Khammam and Warangal districts.

To add to the problems , the politicians are demanding that they be invited to the official functions of the Singareni collieries. This has never happened before in Singareni. Due to this, several officials and the employees are deeply unhappy. They feel that this will vitiate the atmosphere by bringing in unnecessary politics. Most of the pressures are coming from the ruling party in Telangana, a union leader complained.
