The governments insist that the people pay up their taxes on time so that welfare and developmental activities are taken up properly. Special campaigns are conducted and house-to-house verifications are done to make the people pay up the taxes. The tax evaders are dealt with firmness. But, what if the state government itself stops paying taxes and ends up as a defaulter?

The iconic Pragathi Bhavan, the highest seat of authority in Telangana and the official residence of the chief minister, is one such tax defaulter. The total pending tax payments have mounted to Rs 25 lakh. These are the taxes that the government has not paid since 2018. The GHMC, which has to collect the property tax, did not even serve a notice to Pragathi Bhavan. It is merely slapping an interest amount on the unpaid taxes. Records show that Rs 5 lakh has been imposed as penalty for the Pragathi Bhavan. At least since 2018, the taxes have not been paid.

The Pragathi Bhavan, which is located on survey number 6-3-87 A in the Sector 17 of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) owes Rs 25, 49, 914 as house tax dues. Of this, Rs 15, 12,019 are old dues of the previous years. The penalty for defaulting is Rs 5, 28, 900.

Interestingly, the GHMC officials are also not imposing all the rules and conditions that apply to other properties under their jurisdiction. The officials are wary of levying the penalties as per the rules because of the obvious reason.

The Pragathi Bhavan was the brainchild of KCR, It was built by demolishing the quarters of 10 IAS Officers and 24 peons. The house warming of the Pragathi Bhavan was performed on November 23, 2016.
